The Alberta Legislature Grounds in Edmonton, Alberta, focuses on enhancing the North Plaza, a significant public space adjacent to the historic Alberta Legislature Building, constructed between 1907 and 1913 in the Beaux-Arts style.
The centerpiece of this endeavor is the implementation of the "River" concept, a design inspired by Alberta's diverse natural landscapes. This innovative water feature transforms the previously existing terraced wading pools into an interactive experience that mimics a meandering river. Large, sculptural granite boulders, sourced sustainably from central Alberta farmland, line the undulating watercourse, establishing a direct connection to the province's geological and cultural heritage.
The "River" design incorporates dynamic water elements such as mist, fog, spray, spouts, and ground-level water animations, creating an engaging environment for visitors of all ages. The layout emphasizes accessibility, featuring barrier-free entry points to ensure inclusivity for individuals with mobility challenges. Surrounding the water feature, the design preserves the existing mature tree canopy and introduces native plantings reflective of Alberta's alpine and prairie ecosystems. Terraced seating areas and reinforced turf lawns provide versatile spaces for relaxation and public events, seamlessly integrating with the natural surroundings.
Phase 1 of the revitalization, which included the refurbishment of the reflecting pool and dome fountain, was completed and opened to the public on July 1, 2024. Phase 2, encompassing the construction of the "River" water feature, is currently underway and anticipated to be completed in 2025.
