Sherbourne Common Park | Toronto, ON

Located in the heart of East Bayfront, this former industrial area was masterfully transformed into an innovative waterfront park with abundant public green space. Bringing to the table both beauty and functionality, Sherbourne Common is the first ever park in Canada to use a sophisticated storm-water management system in its design.

Seamlessly housed in the basement of the park’s pavilion and filters, the water treatment facility uses ultraviolet light to clean collected stormwater. Treated water then travels underground to the north side where it is released via three nine-metre-high art sculptures called 'Light Showers' designed by artist Jill Anholt. The water then follows an urban channel out to Lake Ontario.

The project has been recognized with the 2013 Toronto Urban Design Award, the 2013 Honor Award from the American Society of Landscape Architects, and the 2012 National Honour for Design from the Canadian Society of Landscape Architects.
